This article will walk you through how to configure the Jamf Parent app to help restrict apps and websites on your students iPad. This article assumes you have already downloaded and linked the Jamf Parent app with your students iPad. If not please follow these directions first. There are two different options within the app to configure restrictions. Device Rules will allow you to customize which apps/websites your student has access to as well as a time frame. Allowed Apps is a quick way to restrict App usage and lock your student into a specific application. Please click the appropriate link below to jump to the instructions.
1. Once your student has been added to the Jamf Parent app you will notice their name listed on the main screen. If you have linked multiple students you will see all their names listed. Tap on the student you want to setup device rules for.
2. This screen is the configuration main screen where you will see three tabs to configure or view information on. The Device Rules tab is where you want to be to setup restrictions for apps and websites. This is the main tab that will display. Tap "Create Device Rules" to setup a new rule.
3. The Restricted Apps page has categories setup that will restrict the apps that would belong to those options. The built in categories do not allow altering the specific apps which will be blocked. You may select only one option but can create multiple rules once done. In this example we will be choosing the "Custom" option for more granular control. Once selected tap the "Next" button.
4. The Apps pane will list any available app on the students device. Here you can select which applications you want to ALLOW the student access to. Keep in mind certain apps are restricted at the district level and will not show regardless, App Store, Game Center, Messages, FaceTime for example. Once you have chosen the apps you want your student to use tap the "Next" button in the upper right corner. In this example we are allowing Safari and the Camera. *It is important to note that Elkhart Community Schools filters iPads at home using an App on the iPads called Cisco Security Connector. If possible please always ALLOW this app to be installed/used, as it may cause problems with filtering.
5. The Websites pane will allow you to enter websites that your student WILL have access to. To add a site tap the "Add a Website" option. If you do not want to restrict a website you may tap the "Next" in the right corner and proceed to option 7.
6. The Add a Website screen will need you to enter in a name of the website and the URL to access the website. In this example we would like the student to be able to access National Geographic. I have named it Nat Geo and entered in nationalgeographic.com as the URL. When finished tap "Add". You may enter more websites or continue by tapping "Next" in the right corner.
7. The Day & Time pane will allow you to choose the day of the week and the time which this restriction will be active. Scroll down for the time. You may select multiple days or choose "Always" to have the restriction always active. Your selection will show with the green slider on the right. In this option we have selected the weekdays and altered the time for after school. The Begin Time is the time the restrictions will take place on the iPad. The End Time is when the restrictions will end. Tap "Next" when finished.
8. The Device Rule Name pane will allow you to give the rule you have created a name. Tap in the "Name" blank field to input a name. Once finished tap "Save" to end the rule creating.
9. The device rule is now in effect and will set restrictions on the student iPad according to the rules you have created. The student device will need to be connected to WiFi in order for rules to update and apply. You may edit this rule at any time by tapping on the rule you would like to change. To delete the rule slide the rule to the left with your finger.
1. The Allowed Apps pane has different options for quickly restricting apps without setting schedules. As with Device Rules there are buttons on the side with preconfigured categories. When they are set to green the student is able to access those apps. When set to grey the student will be restricted. Elkhart Community Schools restricts the use of certain apps on the devices and these options will not allow them to be used regardless, FaceTime, App Store, Messages for example.
2. If you would like to lock your student into a specific App for a limited amount of time then you can tap the "Enable App Lock" text at the top.
3. You will see a screen with a list of applications that are on the student device. From here you may select ONE app to lock the iPad into that app or select multiple to give the student access to several apps. You will also need to select a time frame for the restriction to take place. Once chosen select the "Done" option in the right corner to save your settings and restrict the student device.
4. Once the restriction is in place you may disable it or change the allowed Apps by navigating back to the Allowed Apps pane. Here you can view how much time is left in the restriction or select "Disable App Lock" to turn off the restrictions set. You can also tap "Change Allowed Apps" to alter the list you chose.
